de Brún to take part in EU climate change committee meeting with Ken Livingstone

20 June, 2008

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has said that reducing CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 is a step in the right direction.

Speaking prior to the Thematic Session of the European Parliament Temporary Committee on Climate Change on Monday 23rd June 15.00 - 18.30, Ms de Brún said:

"The theme of 'Achieving significant CO2 emission reductions in short time' provides an ideal opportunity to debate this issue of paramount importance.

"Many areas in the world have already been affected by the effects of an increase in global average temperatures and the latest scientific evidence suggests that the next 5 years will be crucial in avoiding further irreversible damage.

"The participation of former London Mayor Ken Livingstone is of significant importance. In his time as mayor he introduced many innovative ways of reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the domestic and commercial arenas, in transport and energy supply.

"Sinn Féin believes that a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 is a step in the right direction, following the example set by the Scottish Government who also set legally binding targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% on 1990 levels by 2050." Críoch
