Sinn Féin dismiss Irish Mirror claims

20 June, 2008

Sinn Féin Assembly Group Leader John O'Dowd MLA has dismissed claims in the Irish Mirror that the party is considering a ministerial reshuffle as 'nonsense'.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"It is total nonsense to suggest that the party is considering a ministerial reshuffle. This story is about the vocal campaign running across the media from the pro-grammar school lobby who want to retain academic selection.

"Sinn Fein recognise the need to the reform of the education system because it is failing too many of our children. We want to see all children getting an equal start in life and ending the divisions created by academic selection is part of that. Sinn Fein share the view of the majority of educationalists that academic selection should have no part in the education of our children.

"Regardless of media fantasies about the Education Minister no-one should be in any doubt that Caitríona has the party's total support in achieving the wide ranging education reforms that are so urgently required." ENDS
