Fears remain over future of tax office jobs – Leonard

23 June, 2008

Sinn Féin's Billy Leonard has said that there is still a "major job of work" to do on the issue of the Revenue and Custom jobs. He is still fearful that the consultation will not necessarily save 39 jobs still directly under threat.

He added:

"I have spoken to numerous people from the tax office and they are stressing their deep concerns over these 39 jobs plus the discussion on all aspects of the consultation.

"There is still a major job of work to do here and Council corporately and councillors and their parties can make important contributions.

"These 39 posts are mostly part-time and held by women. There will be great difficulties in expecting them to accept transfers and greater and more expensive travel. It is therefore vital that all resources are put into the fight to retain them in Coleraine.

"Positive efforts must be made by everybody to their best on this issue. We have lost public and private sector jobs: the Coleraine drain must stop." ENDS
