Time for DUP to stop being childish about Irish medium education

24 June, 2008

Speaking prior to a DUP motion on the status of Gaelscoil na Daróige in Derry, Sinn Féin Irish language spokesperson Francie Brolly MLA has said that todays debate is another attack on the Irish language and another attack on the Education Minister Caitríona Ruane.

Mr Brolly said,

"The motion lodged today by the DUP is not a serious motion.

"Gaelscoil na Daróige is providing an essential service for children and parents who with to avail of Irish medium education.

"Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta, has said that there is provision for three Gaelscoileanna in Derry and that Gaelscoil na Daróige is providing Irish medium education in an area where there is a demand.

"Irish medium education is the fastest growing sector in the education system with over 4000 children and over 60 schools.

"Todays motion is more about a sustained attack on the Irish language and an attempt at undermining the Education Minister.

"What message does this sent to the children of Gaelscoil na Daróige?

"Its time for the DUP to stop being childish." Críoch
