Unionists accused of trying block informed education debate

24 June, 2008

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, John O'Dowd MLA has accused unionists of trying to block an informed debate on the future of post-primary transfer.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"Unionists are trying delay the resolution of this issue by not even agreeing to have it discussed at the Executive. This is not the way to resolve the issue and it is unfair on parents, teachers and children who want clarity.

"Caitríona Ruane is determined to achieve progress and take forward her proposals on post-primary transfer. This includes giving parents, teachers and children the information they need to make informed decisions and ensuring everyone is aware of the detail of those proposals.

"Unionists and the DUP in particular need to tell parents and teachers why they are standing in the way of this issue being resolved.

"Unfortunately some opposed to resolving these issues are more interested in creating confusion and distracting from the core issue which is the need to transform our education system, manage falling student numbers and offer greater opportunity to all our children." ENDS
