Morgan challenges Taoiseach on Junior Ministries

1 July, 2008

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan directly challenged the Taoiseach Brian Cowen to justify his decision to appoint 35 Ministers including 20 Junior Ministers for a population of 4.2 million given that he has been just recently been 'swanning around the Country' telling people that 27 Commissioners for an EU population of 496 million is too many and unmanageable.

He said, "Taoiseach, about 12 weeks ago you appointed 20 Junior Ministers bring the total number of Ministers to 35. Yet only a few weeks later you were swanning around the Country telling people that 27 Commissioners for 27 Member States was too many and needed to be changed.

"Do you not see the hypocrisy in claiming that 27 Commissioners for a Union of States with a combined population of 496 million when you have appointed 35 Ministers here for a population of approximately 4.2 million.

"Are you satisfied that there is a requirement for 20 Junior Ministers and are you completely satisfied that we are getting absolute value for money from them?" ENDS
