Monaghan Mayor welcomes discovery of massive goldmine

1 July, 2008

The Mayor of Monaghan, Sinn Féin Councillor Matt Carthy, has welcomed the discovery of a massive goldmine in County Monaghan today. Mayor Carthy said he is hopeful that the discovery will bring financial and employment benefits to the County.

He said, "In the current climate of job losses and recession it is a welcome piece of news for the people of Monaghan to hear that a massive goldmine has been found in our County.

"It is essential that the people of Monaghan feel the benefits of our natural resources and I would therefore be hopeful that this find will bring financial and employment benefits to the County.

"If it is found to be profitable to mine for this gold then I will calling for local, County Monaghan workers, where possible, to be employed in that work. Prior to any work taking place a full independent environment assessment must take place.

"The Government must ensure that a fair share of any profits from this discovery are returned to the state coffers for the benefit of the people." ENDS
