Executive support for low-carbon innovation needed - de Brún

2 July, 2008 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has echoed calls from the Assembly Agriculture and Rural Development Committee for the Executive to be pro-active in its support for low-carbon innovation. Ms de Brún, who is a memeber of the European Parliament Climate Change Committee, made the call in response to the report issued today by the Assembly Agriculture and Rural Development Committee on renewable energy and alternative land use.

Ms de Brun said:

"Today's report contains some important recommendations and I echo their call for the Executive to be pro-active in its support for low carbon innovation. Closer co-operation and co-ordination between Departments such as DARD, DETI and DoE is needed and between the relevant Assembly Committees also. I also strongly support the report's call for building regulations here to be revised to promote the use of renewable energy technologies.

"A tremendous opportunity exists to put the production and use of renewable energy at the heart of the Executive economic development strategy.

"This report contains some recommendations which will be very useful in light of the the current consultation on the EU Renewable Energy Directive, the forthcoming Action Plan arising from the EU Task Force Report, the challenge of high fuel costs, the awaited report from DETI's Bio Energy study and the pressure to meet the EU Nitrates Directive."
