Rise in Irish Passport claims come as no surprise - McElduff

3 July, 2008 - by Barry McElduff

Sinn Féin's West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff has welcomed the news that over 400,000 people in the North of Ireland have claimed or renewed Irish passports over the past ten years.

He said,

"This news comes as no surprise to me and I am delighted to hear it. This is one very positive outworking of the Good Friday Agreement, which allows for those people living in the Six Counties to claim their Irish citizenship.

People here in the north are rightly becoming more open and expressive of their Irish identity and are becoming increasingly confident when travelling around the world.

What we need to see now is the Irish government respecting the demand from people in the North and establishing an Irish passport office here in the Six Counties without any further delay. This will allow for more Irish citizens living in the Six Counties to claim their Irish passports. This is an issue I have raised with Dermot Ahern in the past and I will be seeking an urgent meeting with Mícheal Martin to discuss this issue further."
