McCann concerned at funding cuts to womens sector

2 July, 2008 - by Jennifer McCann

Following a party meeting to discuss cuts in funding to Women's Organisations who deliver Training & Education Projects, Sinn Fein MLA and party spokesperson on women Jennifer McCann has called on the Executive to ensure that funding is made available to secure the sustainability of community based training.

Jennifer McCann said,

"The sustainability of Community Based Training delivered by women's organisations is currently under threat due to a crisis in their funding.

"I and a number of Party Colleagues including the Chair of the DEL Committee Sue Ramsey have been working with a number of women's organisations who deliver training and education projects throughout the North to secure the sector.

"The women have raised a number of concerns including the difficulties associated with accessing match funding for European Social Fund projects, and the ending of Peace 2 monies.

"Women's groups and Organisations have worked with disadvantaged communities and marginalised groups to provide front line services within local communities both in terms of Peace Building and delivering Training and Education.

"Sinn Féin are therefore calling on Government Departments and the Executive to ensure that funding is made available to secure the sustainability of community based training." CRÍOCH
