Loyalists accused of undermining community relations

7 July, 2008

Sinn Féin Ballymnea Councillor Monica Digney has said that the Loyalist Flags around the council amenity site, that includes recycling facilities, at the Ballymnea Council offices have resulted in a number of complaints from constituents and only serve to undermine community relations.

Cllr Digney said:

"These flags are clearly threatening and deeply offensive to many people in the Ballymena area. They should be taken down immediately. They should not be flying over a council amenity site.

"Those from within the Loyalist community responsible for putting these flags need to recognise that they are not wanted.

"The Council and NIE need to take responsibility for this and the Council in particular need to show leadership by ensuring that a council owned area is a shared space free from intimidating flags." ENDS
