Ó Donnghaile utterly condemns the selling of ‘Fenian Flags’ on Belfast’s Newtonards Road

8 July, 2008

Sinn Féin's East Belfast Representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has expressed disgust and offence at the selling of what they refer to as 'Fenian Flags', which are in actual fact the Irish National Flag, in the Union Jack Shop in East Belfast.

"First of all I want to express how totally bigoted and sectarian an exercise this is; what is the purpose of selling the flags in this part of the City other than to desecrate them? Will this desecration be taking place at events sponsored by Belfast City Council?

It strikes me as quite strange, given the amount of funding the Irish Government is committing to working class Loyalist areas, why this shop would be selling what it calls 'Fenian Flags' in the run up to the Eleventh Night and the Twelfth Parade.

I would call on the owners of this shop to reflect on the hard work put in by community workers and political representative across East Belfast to ensure a quiet and peaceful summer, this type of irresponsible bigotry does nothing to assist that work."
