EU must deliver meaningful proposals to fishing crisis
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries Martin Ferris TD has today called on the European Commission to propose real and meaningful proposals to address the current plight of fishermen facing the current fuel crisis. The Kerry North TD was speaking ahead of tomorrow's vote in the Parliament on a document to be presented to it by the Commission.
Deputy Ferris said:
"I hope that the proposals to be presented contain real and meaningful measures to address the current crisis. The costs burden imposed by rising fuel prices has to be tackled but there must also be recognition of the fact that the CFP and current policy is threatening to destroy the fishing sector, particularly in this country.
"What must not be allowed to happen is that the Commissions exploit the fuel crisis in order to accelerate its plans to further close down the Irish fisheries by tying any proposed aid to fishermen agreeing to further restrictions or by forcing them to accept being bought out of their livelihoods?"
