Concern at Report into Hydebank Wood – Jennifer McCann MLA

9 July, 2008 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann has expressed concern regarding the report, published today, into conditions and practices at the Hydebank Centre.

Ms McCann said,

"This is a deeply worrying situation if the report's analysis is accurate, the report suggests that juvenile prisoners are spending twenty hours a day locked in their cells, it also found that prisoners are routinely strip searched and unnecessarily handcuffed.

It was the second inspection at the centre in two-and-a-half years and the inspectors said the situation had got worse since their last visit.

Last year I visited female prisoners in Hydebank and the findings of this report highlights very real problems in Hydebank.

As an elected politician I will continue to monitor the conditions of those held in Hydebank.
