‘Spotlight on older people’ report highlights very worrying realities – Brady

10 July, 2008 - by Mickey Brady

Commenting on today's report entitled 'Spotlight on older people' published by Help the Aged, Sinn Féin MLA Mickey Brady has expressed his shock and disgust at the figures highlighting that one in seven older people live below the poverty line.

He said,

"These figures are truly shocking and a very real indication of some of the suffering our older people are going through. As a society we need to collectively look at how our older people are treated and cared for in their later years.

I commend Help the Aged in the work they and other charitable groups undertake to help older members of our community, their work needs very real and practical support from the Executive to help tackle the issue of poverty amongst older people.

What we need to see now is the Executive committing themselves, like they have rightly done with regard to child poverty, to tackling the issue of poverty amongst our older people head on."
