Theft of home heating oil below contempt - Mickey Brady MLA

17 July, 2008 - by Mickey Brady

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on the elderly, Mickey Brady MLA (Newry & Armagh) has described those involved in the theft of home heating oil as being below contempt.

Mickey Brady said:

"The theft of home heating oil seems to be the latest target of unscrupulous criminals. It has been reported in various locations across the North that this type of opportunist crime is on the increase. It would seem that these criminals operate by observing deliveries to homes and then return at an opportune time to steal the oil.

"These people are striking the homes of some of the most vulnerable in our society including the elderly and those living alone.

"With the cost of home heating oil at its highest price ever, having oil stolen is causing severe hardship to many families who can not afford to refill their tanks.

"This type of crime takes time and special equipment such as a tanker or large tank in the back of a van and siphoning equipment.

"I would call on people to be observant. If you see suspicious activity around a neighbour's house, particularly if there is no one at home, either record identifying markings and registration number of vehicles or call the police. Your house could be next."
