Hallinan demands publication of Haulbowline reports

23 July, 2008

Cork Sinn Féin Councillor Martin Hallinan is in Dublin today as part of a delegation meeting with Government consultants to be briefed on the situation at Haulbowline. Speaking ahead of the meeting Councillor Hallinan demanded that the Government publish reports dating as far back as 1995 detailing contamination on the Island.

Councillor Hallinan said, "Government claims that there is no health risk at Haulbowline do not ring true. Reports dating as far back as 1995 stated that the site is heavily contaminated on the basis of dust samples and indications that there had been leaks into the River.

"Workers have been consistently denied access to these reports with the excuse that they are confidential. I am demanding that the Government publishes these reports immediately.

"Environment Minister John Gormley has made a number of reports available including a previously confidential report from 2005 commissioned by Cork County Council which found levels of the carcinogen Chromium 6 above acceptable levels. That would explain the above average rate of cancer in the general area.

"He has also promised to make all previous reports available as well as a new report by independent consultants and that is to be welcomed. However I believe that the public has a right to access these reports and the Minister should go further and actually publish them.

"I will be raising these issues at today's meeting." ENDS
