Ferris in Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon tomorrow
Sinn Féin Agriculture and Fisheries Spokesperson Martin Ferris TD will continue his tour of the West Coast tomorrow when he visits Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim to meet with farming and fishing organisations in those Counties.
Deputy Ferris is currently compiling an official Oireachtas report on what is required to ensure the future viability of the farming and fishing sectors in the West of Ireland and will use his meetings along the West Coast to inform the report which will be presented to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries.
Speaking ahead of his engagements tomorrow Deputy Ferris said, "It is clear that the West of Ireland is suffering a death by a thousand cuts. Fishing along the West coast is under immense pressure from the EU Common Fisheries Policy while farmers are facing a possibly disastrous WTO deal if the Mandelson Proposals are accepted. The viability of these sectors is under threat.
"In an attempt to secure the future viability of farming and fishing in the West I am producing a report for the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries on 'What is required to ensure the future viability of Farming and Fishing in the West of Ireland'. To inform that report I am meeting with farming and fishing and other interested groups right along the West Coast.
"Tomorrow I will be in Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim where I will meet with the local IFA, Macra na Feirme and others." ENDS
