De Brún calls for support for Belfast Gay Pride March

29 July, 2008 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has called for support for this Saturday's pride march in Belfast after taking part in last night's 'Pride Talks Back' event and has reiterated Sinn Féin's support for the LGBT community and their commitment to equality for members of the Gay community.

Ms de Brún said,

"I was privileged to have the opportunity to speak at last night's debate and to take part in the discussions that took place. This is of course a particularly difficult time for the Gay community given the antagonistic remarks made recently by Iris Robinson. It comes as no surprise that the LGBT community are rightly taking pride in themselves and their community and asserting it through the Pride Festival taking place throughout this week. It is time we ended the myth that heterosexuals are 'normal' and everyone else isn't.

"I was also very moved by the Amnesty International address given by Peter Tatchell who gave an international perspective on the denial of gay rights as well as an overview of what progress has been made to date and the part we can play locally. I n particular I support his call for people locally to write letters in support of those seeking asylum from countries where members of the LGBT community are subjected to harassment, torture and the threat of execution.

I want to congratulate the organisers of last night's events. I also want to extend best wishes to those taking part in this week's Pride Festival, particularly this Saturday's Parade. " ENDS
