Ó Snodaigh launches renewed Sinn Féin campaign on Community Safety
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD this morning launched a renewed Sinn Féin campaign on community safety. The campaign aims to consult with members of the public in order to inform the party's submission to the Garda Policing Plan for 2009.
Speaking this morning Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "The quarterly crime statistics published today show a significant increase in drug crime and armed crime in addition to continuing unacceptable levels of other crimes such as criminal damage and public order offences.
"Safety in the community and the fight against drugs and drug related crime has always been priorities for Sinn Féin. Anti social behaviour, drugs and drug related crime continue to wreak havoc on communities throughout the state and Sinn Féin believes that tackling these crimes must be the top priority for the Gardaí in 2009.
"This morning we are launching a renewed campaign on the issue of community safety. We aim to consult with as wide a section of the community as possible in order to assess the problems in communities in order to inform Garda and Council priorities.
"Sinn Féin members across the state will be out knocking doors, hosting meetings distributing information. The information gleaned from this campaign will be brought to local councils, joint policing committees and meetings with senior Gardaí. It will also help to inform our submission to the Garda Policing Plan for 2009.
"We have printed a leaflet outlining the influence we had on last years policing plan and highlighting outstanding proposals we feel still need to be implemented. This leaflet along with a drugs awareness pamphlet for parents will be delivered to thousands of homes throughout the state." ENDS
