RTE must ensure service in North - McElduff

West Tyrone MLA, Barry McElduff has called on RTE to ensure that its service is available throughout the 32 Counties when it converts to digital in 2012.

Barry McElduff said:

"Under provisions of the Good Friday Agreement Irish language Television station TG4 must be made available to viewers in the North. The fact that the analogue service, which facilitates many people across the Six Counties will be lost is an utter catastrophe. Many working class families simply do not have the financial means to access SKY Digital and will therefore be unable to avail of the so called national broadcaster.

"It would seem that rather than look to ways of fulfilling its claim to be the 'national' broadcaster by ensuring delivery of service to all parts of the 'nation' both RTE and the Irish government are once more displaying their partitionist approach to all things national.

"I will be speaking with other national organisation such as the GAA, Conradh na Gaeilge, etc and those political parties who claim the reunification of Ireland as their goal to demand that Minister Eamon Ryan guarantee access to the national Broadcaster in every region of the nation.

"I have writing to the Minister to impress on him the sense of outrage at his lack of effort to deliver access to the 'national' Broadcaster to those Irish citizens trapped in the northern partitioned state against their will and will be seeking an urgent meeting to clarify what reasons has led to this unacceptable situation."
