RTÉ services must be delivered equally to all citizens north and south – Ferris
Sinn Féin Communications Spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has called on RTÉ to ensure that its services are available to everyone in Ireland when it goes digital in 2012. There are growing concerns that citizens north of the border will have to pay to access RTÉ via digital providers such as sky.
Deputy Ferris said today, "There is an obligation under the Good Friday Agreement that Irish Language Station TG4 must be provided to citizens across the north. However, as RTÉ prepares to go digital in 2012, there are concerns that TG4 will be the only station that RTÉ provides to citizens in the North and its other stations will have to be picked up through digital television providers such as Sky. This will incur an unfair extra cost to citizens wishing to avail of RTÉ's services in the North.
"I am calling on RTÉ to truly live up to its claims to be the national broadcaster and ensure that all citizens north and south have equal access to its services when it goes digital in 2012.
"I will be writing to both RTÉ and to communications Minister Eamon Ryan to ask them to take measures to ensure the continued availability of RTÉ's services north of the border post 2012." ENDS
