O'Connor welcomes Clondalkin Heroin seizure

6 August, 2008

Clondalkin Sinn Féin Councillor Shane O'Connor has welcomed last night's seizure of heroin in his constituency and said targeting heroin dealers must remain a top priority for Gardaí.

Councillor O'Connor said, "Recently published figures show record numbers of heroin addicts seeking treatment. The figure has doubled to 10,000 in the past ten years. However, the current cocaine epidemic has overshadowed the heroin crisis in recent years.

"While the cocaine epidemic must remain a top priority for the Gardaí it is essential that the fight against heroin is not de-prioritised. Heroin dealers must remain a top target for Garda Drug Squads.

"The seizure of €1million worth of heroin in Clondalkin last night and the arrest of three people is most welcome. It is now essential that we see convictions and appropriate sentences handed down.

"I congratulate those officers involved on last night's operation and am very happy to see that the heroin problem in West Dublin is being taken seriously." ENDS
