DUP failing public with their smokescreens - Leonard

Sinn Féin's Billy Leonard has reacted to recent statements from MLAs Gregory Campbell and Adrian McQuillan in the aftermath of trouble in Coleraine last weekend.

He said:

"Both Gregory Campbell and Adrian McQuillan have spent the last two days doing their shallow party political attack on Sinn Féin making ridiculous assertions. It is clear that they have decided to employ this tactic whereas the public are looking for answers about loyalist guns and threats.

They are disgracing themselves.

We have even had the comical assertion by another DUP representative, Maurice Bradley that he had to go and change his suit at the critical time when one hundred plus loyalists poured into Coleraine streets with their arsenal of hate. People are wondering if Maurice saw any of this loyalist group as he went for his change of clothes.

I put it to Gregory Campbell again.

Will he work with his loyalist network to ensure that loyalist guns never appear on Coleraine streets again?

Will he work with his loyalist network to get all threats against nationalists and republicans lifted?

Will he work with his loyalist network to lessen the raw sectarian hatred that manifest itself in vicious attacks with claw hammers, hatchets, golf clubs and sticks?

Will he work with all to lessen the tension in this town and move forward?

I also remind Gregory Campbell and Adrian McQuillan that in early spring I suggested that all political representatives meet to move our situation in relation to flags, bonfires and parading forward. That was rejected by the DUP.

Until Gregory Campbell and Adrian McQuillan think less of shallow party political tactics and seriously address issues such as loyalist guns and threats, they will have contributed nothing to this serious situation. " ENDS
