Craigavon Council Ignore Legal Advice – McGibbon disappointed

20 August, 2008

Sinn Féin Councillor Johnny McGibbon has said he is "disappointed", but not surprised at the unionist parties on Craigavon Borough Council after they voted to ignore legal advice, and voted to fly an Olympic Flag incorporating the Union Flag on August 24th.

The flag, due to mark the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and the handover for London 2012, was one of two designs discussed by Councillors. The other option was a neutral Olympic flag design.

Cllr. McGibbon commented,

"I am extremely disappointed at the Unionist parties on Craigavon Borough Council. With an opportunity to show leadership and send out a signal to the nationalist and republican community that the Council is open to everyone, they failed to rise to the challenge.

"Despite the advice of the Borough Solicitor they proceeded, by vote, to fly a flag which clearly incorporates the Union Flag. The Borough Solicitor himself acknowledged that the flying of this flag is in breach of Council policy, in his advice to Councillors."

Cllr. McGibbon concluded,

"Both the UUP and DUP have ignored Council's legal advice, when a clear alternative flag was available. These parties seem determined to keep Craigavon Borough Council behind the times, but Sinn Féin will continue with the agenda of change and equality. These issues will not just be allowed to slip by." ENDS
