Environment Minister must ensure flood relief is provided to all affected - Mary Lou McDonald
Mary Lou McDonald, Sinn Fein MEP for Dublin, today called on the Environment Minister to outline his plans for flood relief works for the Greater Dublin Area. Ms McDonald, who has been meeting with Dublin residents across the city in recent days, was speaking in reaction to Minister Gormley's commitment to providing funding to the Carlow region.
Ms McDonald said "The speed with which Minister Gormley attended at the scene in Carlow and his immediate commitment to his party colleague Mary White that a flood relief contract would proceed would suggest that this was merely a political stunt aimed at providing a photo op for the Minister and his party colleagues.
"I am in the middle of a series of meetings with residents across Dublin who have been affected by the recent flooding. There is a palpable sense of frustration and anger at the lack of support and information provided by both government and local agencies.
"What is needed is an immediate commitment to provide the necessary financial relief to all those affected across the state as well as a long term strategy that will deal with the effects of climate change in all areas, and not just those with a Green Party TD." ENDS
