Last chance to apply for Agri-Environment Scheme - Hearty
Sinn Féin Newry and Mourne spokesperson on Agriculture and Rural Development, Councillor Terry Hearty has reminded potential applicants for the Countryside Management Scheme (NICMS) that the closing date for application is 5.00pm on 29 August 2008.
The NICMS financially rewards landowners (including farmers) for positively managing and enhancing the countryside and is a voluntary scheme. Participants of the scheme will be required to undertake a number of requirements such as managing all farmland habitats and historic monuments and protecting the environment.
Cllr Hearty said,
"I encourage farmers within the Slieve Gullion Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) to apply to join the Countryside Management Scheme. As part of this scheme, farmers will receive financial encouragement to adopt farming practices that will protect farmland habitats and wildlife, improve water quality and tackle climate change.
"You can apply either in person or by phoning your local DARD office in Newry or Armagh. A Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) trading Farm Business Number is required and you must farm a minimum of three hectares of land. Conacre land is not eligible for this scheme." ENDS
