Ferris condemns closure of Marine Research Centre
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD, has strongly condemned the decision by Údarás na Gaeltachta to close its marine research subsidiary, Taighde Mara Teo. The Kerry North TD said that it represented not only a blow to the development of aquaculture in the west but a lack of faith in the future of marine based enterprise.
Deputy Ferris said: "At the moment I am engaged in a series of consultations, authorised by the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries, on the future of farming and fishing in the West. I have met a number of people interested in the area of aquaculture especially given the current crisis within the sea fishery. Therefore to close Taighde Mara sends a negative signal to the sector.
"It is clear that there is an official attitude which is almost defeatist in relation to the coastal economy in the West. This is yet another indication of this and another sign that something urgently needs to be done if the tide of decline is to be reversed." ENDS
