Welcome for new John Lewis application

28 August, 2008 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Fein MLA Jennifer McCann has welcomed the latest application from Westfield and the partners, which will see investment in a John Lewis store and a number of other retail units at Sprucefield.

Speaking before the official launch of the planned proposals at the Island Civic Centre Ms McCann, who is the Deputy Chair of the Assembly Committee for Enterprise Trade and Investment, said:

"I welcome this latest application and hope that the proposed investment will soon become a reality.

"This site is close to the Colin area which makes up almost a third of the population of the Lisburn Borough. It is an area of high unemployment and two of its electoral wards are listed in the top ten of the most deprived wards in the North of Ireland.

"The Investment Strategy and the Programme for Government clearly identify the need to prioritise areas of disadvantage and need in future investment opportunities.

"This development will bring up to 1500 jobs during it's construction period and beyond, and myself and my party colleagues will be working closely with potential employers and training organisations to ensure that areas of disadvantage and need are targeted for employment opportunities." ENDS
