West Belfast MLA, Cllr Fra Mc Cann has again called on Margaret Ritchie to legislate for the mandatory Registration of the private rented sector.
The west Belfast MLA said that in recent weeks the Housing Executive had inspected 3 houses in south Belfast and found that a total of 83 people were living in them, one alone containing 38 residents. It is thought that this practice is widespread in the unregulated private rented sector.
"In October last year I put forward a motion for debate at the Assembly calling on the Minister for Social Development to legislate for the mandatory registration of all landlords in the private rented sector. This motion was passed but no action has followed and all we have heard up to now is empty rhetoric.
Nothing less than a mandatory registration scheme will allow authorities to tackle the serious problem in this sector; anything less is just tampering with a failed system."
