"Over £92,000 going on security guards for Mountpottinger Barracks; it's time for this base to go!" – Ó Donnghaile

"Over £92,000 going on security guards for Mountpottinger Barracks; it's time for this base to go!" - Ó Donnghaile

Sinn Féin East Belfast Representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has blasted the PSNI and those supporters calling the retention of Mountpottinger Barracks after a Freedom of Information request revealed how much it is costing and how often it is being used.

Mr Ó Donnghaile said,

"Given the consultation into the future of Mountpottinger and the campaign for its removal in the Short Strand community I requested information into the costs of Mountpottinger and the degree to which it is actually being used. Although knowing full well this base is rarely visited and that costs would be high, I was still shocked to see the full extent of money that is being wasted on this monstrosity every year.

From the end of July 2007 until the end of July 2008 just 18 people actually used Mountpottinger Barracks, to produce papers and report lost property etc.

Last year the maintenance of this base cost over £30,000, more worrying again is the fact that it is costing over £92,000 to pay private security firms to stay in this fort!

Overall the total cost of Mountpottinger last year was over £120,000, ninety two thousand of which was spent on security guards!

These are some frightening statistics and show clearly the very real need for this disaster to go and policing assets to be more effectively used in the East Belfast District. Surely those people cheerleading for this relic to remain must look at these figures with the same shock that I do and come to the conclusion that, at this vital time, Mountpottinger must go!"
