"Allister out-of-touch with realities of conflict resolution": de Brún

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has labelled Jim Allister "out-of touch with the realities of conflict resolution and with the political process".

de Brún was responding to comments Allister made in the European Parliament in Brussels when he criticised plans to build a conflict resolution centre at the Long Kesh site and called on the European Commission not to provide funding for the project.

Dismissing Allister's approach de Brún stated: "Conflict resolution is a long and difficult process and any help that the EU or any international actors can bring to that process should be welcomed by all who are serious about developing a peaceful society. The EU Task Force was set-up to build upon the good work carried out by the PEACE programmes, and supporting a conflict resolution centre at Long Kesh makes sense."

de Brún, the European Parliament's "rapporteur" on an evaluation of the EU Peace programme, expressed the hope that "other conflict resolution processes could benefit from this centre not just the process in Ireland." Ms de Brún concluded "During the debate on my report for the European Parliament on the PEACE programme earlier this year Commissioner Danuta Huebner made mention of the work going on in the North to establish a centre for conflict resolution and said the North has her support in taking this forward."
