Social Package falls a long way short of peoples' expectations - de Brún
Social Package falls a long way short of peoples' expectations
In response to the debate in the European Parliament this morning, Bairbre de Brún MEP has welcomed to the European Commission's renewed interest in social issues while warning that the so-called social package "falls a long way short of peoples' expectations".
Speaking from Brussels, de Brún said:
"The European Commission seems to have realised that the moves towards a less social Europe was one reason for the recent No vote in Ireland. However this package of proposals falls a long way short of peoples' expectations.
"While I welcome the European Commission's renewed interest in things social, the package does little to move the EU in a direction which better meets the needs of ordinary people. When you get beyond the nice words the reality is that the Commission's legislative programme remains committed to deregulation and liberalisation at the expense of workers rights.
"It is disappointing that nothing is being done to address the insecurity which many people feel in the face of rising prices and economic uncertainty, nor to roll back the devastating effects of the recent judgements of the European Court of Justice on fundamental rights and collective bargaining."
