McGuigan - Sinn Féin supports extension of vote to 16 year olds

9 December, 2003

Sinn Féin Assembly member for North Antrim Philip McGuigan has welcomed comments by British Minister Lord Falconer supporting the right of 16 year olds to be extended the vote.

Cllr. McGuigan said:

"Sinn Féin have long advocated the extension of the franchise to those aged 16 and over. We expect 16 year olds to work and contribute, yet we don't extend to them the right to vote.

"I welcome the fact that the British Minister with responsibility for these matters as now voiced his support for an extension of voting rights to 16 year olds.

"Sinn Féin will continue to lobby for this provision to be made a reality despite the opposition of some of the local parties, including the SDLP, who when questioned on the matter during the recent election indicated that they did not support 16 year olds having the right to vote." ENDS
