Restore funding to support family planning services for medical card holders – Ó Caoláin

8 September, 2008

Responding to the announcement by the Irish Family Planning Association that services for medical card holders at its main Dublin clinic have had to be suspended due to HSE cuts, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:

"This latest cut from the HSE means that thousands of medical card holders requiring family planning services will not be able to avail of services for which they have long been eligible. This affects over 4,000 medical card holders who have used the Irish Family Planning Association clinic in Dublin in 2008. Many have depended on this clinic as their own GPs do not provide a full range of contraceptive services.

"It is utter folly to allow this shortfall in funding to continue as the loss of the service to medical card holders will result in poorer sexual and reproductive health and more crisis pregnancies. The Government and HSE should ensure that funding is restored." ENDS
