Anger at PSNI response to suspect device

13 September, 2008

Sinn Féin South Armagh councillor Packie McDonald has said that local people were shocked at the PSNI response to a suspect device in the Jonesborough area.

He also said that those responsible for leaving the device in the area had nothing to offer the people of South Armagh.

Cllr McDonald said:

"By chance I was driving through the village when I saw a film crew taking pictures of this device. Clearly the PSNI were aware of the device yet it took over 2 hours after they were contacted by an independent member of the District Policing Partnership before they arrived on the scene.

"The device was near a children's play park and if it had been a viable device that had exploded local people could have been killed or injured.

"To leave a suspect device for such a long time without putting in place any kind of warning for local residents is unacceptable.

"While those responsible for leaving the device in the area have nothing to offer the people of South Armagh, the PSNI response to the situation was a disgrace." ENDS
