SDLP Commitment To Pro-Agreement Alliance Welcomed

11 December, 2003

The Sinn Féin Assembly group leader Conor Murphy has welcomed a commitment from the SDLP to join with his party in building a pro-Agreement axis to confront the rejectionists who wish to see the Good Friday Agreement implemented.

Mr Murphy said:

"Sinn Féin met with the SDLP last week and we proposed the construction of a pro-Agreement alliance to confront those who want to see the Good Friday Agreement wrecked. I welcome the fact that the SDLP have now responded positively to this suggestion in a letter received from SDLP leader Mark Durkan.

"Sinn Féin are in continuing contact with both governments about the way ahead. We are also seeking bi-lateral meetings with all of the other parties. We have already begun this series of engagements.

"The key to forward movement is the lifting of suspension and the completion of the sequence initiated on the 21st October." ENDS
