Implementation of child poverty report a matter of urgency
Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast, Jennifer McCann has called for the rapid implementation of the report and findings of an inquiry into child poverty that was produced by the Committee of OFMDFM.
Speaking today at the launch of Save the Children's ' Keep the Promise' campaign at Stormont to highlight the effects of child poverty Ms McCann stated:
"Following the completion of the inquiry into child poverty by the committee of the OFMDFM the actions in this report need to be implemented a matter of urgency.
"Implementation of the inquiry's recommendations and the anti-poverty strategy would go a long way towards eliminating child poverty
"The levels of child poverty in the north of Ireland are nothing short of scandalous- around 30% of children here live in poverty and within deprived wards this figure is even higher.
"Given the recent price hikes in basics such as food and fuel more and more families will be forced into poverty.
"On the immediate financial crisis that is affecting people now the Executive needs to look at putting measures in place now to ensure that those families who are in crisis are given the help and support they need.
"Child Poverty affects every constituency and is an issue that should unite all parties. All of us need to work together to ensure that these promises are kept." CRÍOCH
