Monies raised from sale of British army sites need to be delivered to Executive

23 September, 2008

Sinn Fein West Tyrone MP MLA Pat Doherty has stated that the British Security Minister, Paul Goggins, revelation that remaining British Army sites will be sold off to finance British soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan is unacceptable.

Speaking today Mr Doherty said:

"These sites were occupied and made a seriously detrimental effect on local communities where they were based. They are now being sold and the finance raised will lead to further suffering in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Paul Goggins is stating that the land that was occupied here by the British Army will not be returned to the Executive or the local community. This is unacceptable.

"There is a long legacy of the British government under funding countless projects within the north. This is another example of taking what they can regardless of the local economic situation.

"What needs to happen is that these sites need to be handed to the Executive for Executive projects, and if sold, any monies raised from these sites need to be delivered into the local budget."
