Ó Snodaigh calls for Dáil debate on proposal to merge equality and human rights groups

24 September, 2008

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD called for a debate on the proposal to merge five equality and human rights groups into one body.

He said, "There is an urgent need to debate government proposals to merge five equality and human rights agencies into one body.

"The effect of the proposed merger would be to diminish the ability of these agencies to do the jobs they have been doing well, to silence important independent watchdogs and to breach this state's commitments under the Good Friday Agreement.

"The government must clearly detail how any significant cost savings would be achieved by their plans given that the agencies in question already only receive a restrictive total budget of €18 million or less than 4% of the Department's budget." ENDS
