Sinn Féin welcomes CBI call for decisive Action
Sinn Fein Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA has welcomed the call by CBI Chairperson, Brian Ambrose today for decisive action to instil confidence in the Economy.
Mitchel McLaughlin said:
I welcome the call by CBI Chairperson, Brian Ambrose today for decisive action to instil confidence in the economy. There are a number of the points that could be actioned by decisive decisions being taken by individual Ministers. Many of them have been provided for in the Programme for Government and I believe that the Departments whose remit these projects fall under should bring forward plans to implement them without further delay.
The Long Kesh/Maze project is just one example where an immediate decision to proceed would unlock millions of pounds into the local economy and an injection of optimism into the construction sector. The only thing that is holding this up is internal differences about the location of a Stadium within both unionist parties. The Minister should proceed with the project or risk doing more damage to the economy by losing the funding that is available and only available if this project goes ahead as originally envisaged.
Discussion should also be entered into with an Taoiseach, Brian Cowen and Finance Minister, Brian Lenihan to see if the infrastructural projects that the Irish government has committed to can be expedited.
I also agree that there needs to be more urgency on behalf of the Planning system to unblock obstacles to applications so that projects can proceed within a reasonable timeframe. I couldn't agree more that action and delivery on infrastructural projects is a key ingredient to building a stable economy but I would caution against a rush to privatise the public sector. CRÍOCH
