More evidence on climate warming shows Sammy Wilson is wrong - de Brún
Sinn Féin MEP for Foyle Bairbre de Brún has challenged DUP Environment Minister to listen to the experts instead of stubbornly refuting that climate change is happening and that humans are largely responsible for it. Ms de Brún made the challenge as the Met Office Hadley Centre makes clear that "the long-term trend in global temperatures is rising, and humans are largely responsible for this rise."
Speaking from the National Ploughing Championships in County Kilkenny, Ms de Brún said:
"Today's statement by the British Met Office that "anyone who thinks global warming has stopped has their head in the sand" is in stark contrast to the recent comments from DUP Environment Minister, Sammy Wilson, that current views on climate change belong to a "hysterical pseudo-religion"
"The Met Office is a world leading organisation who contribute to the Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change. They are one of the world's leading providers of weather-related services.
"I challenge Sammy Wilson respond to this latest statement, to listen to the experts, to stop peddling mistruths and to take action to see what he and his department can do to tackle global warming on a local basis in conjunction with other Executive departments
"It would be beneficial if Sammy Wilson saved some face for himself and the DUP and took realistic action to combat climate change before he is made to enact measures to tackle climate change by forthcoming European legislation."
Note to editor:
The Met office statement is as follows:
Anyone who thinks global warming has stopped has their head in the sand. The evidence is clear - the long-term trend in global temperatures is rising, and humans are largely responsible for this rise.
