Ó Snodaigh welcomes guidelines for establishment of JPCs throughout the state

24 September, 2008

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has welcomed the launch by the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern of guidelines for the establishment of Joint Policing Committees (JPCs) across the state.

Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said local authorities should waste no time in establishing these committees as they have the potential to provide communities with a positive and constructive influence on Garda operations in their area.

He said, "Sinn Féin has always advocated community involvement and consultation on policing matters in their areas. Our experience of the 29 pilot JPCs has clearly shown the potential of these groups and no time should be wasted by local authorities in establishing them now that the Minister has launched the guidelines.

"JPCs provide communities with an opportunity to positively and constructively influence Garda operations in their area. They also afford elected representatives an opportunity to question senior Gardaí on their actions and inactions which enhances local accountability.

"They were established on the back of a campaign by Sinn Féin for the establishment of District Policing Partnerships to maximise community involvement in local policing. We are eager to see these new committees up and running at the earliest opportunity and our representatives on councils will be calling for their speedy establishment." ENDS
