McCrea playing politics with plight of Farmers - Doherty

25 September, 2008

Sinn Féin Agriculture Spokesperson Pat Doherty MP, MLA (West Tyrone) has said that Agriculture Committee Chairperson, William McCrea seems more interested in scoring petty political points than addressing the genuine concerns of the farming community.

Pat Doherty said:

"Willie McCrea is being dishonest when he says that the Executive has no control over the serious issues that Sinn Fein wants addressed. It is only the Executive that can resolve these issues and Mr McCrea knows that. He is also aware that the Minister of Agriculture is pro-active and genuine in her efforts to alleviate the pressures being experienced by the farming community because of the wet summer that we have had and the present economic climate.

"But political sniping by the DUP will not resolve either the plight of farmers or the political situation that we find ourselves in. If Mr McCrea wishes an early return to Executive business he should use his influence on his Party Leader to commit to real partnership government based on equality where issues important to all sections of society will be addressed and not just those of interest to the DUP. The farming community will see through this thinly disguised attempt by Willie McCrea to score cheap political points at their expense." CRÍOCH
