When will the Government bail out ordinary people in debt to banks? - Doherty

30 September, 2008

Speaking in the Seanad today Donegal Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty called on the Government to bring forward a plan to provide security for ordinary people in debt to banks just as they have bailed out the banks themselves.

He said, "We appreciate the move the Government made today, but we have to remind ourselves that this is a bailout for the banks.

"What I would like to know is when the Government is going to come forward with a plan to provide security for all those ordinary people in debt to the banks - those people who have lost their jobs, are mortgaged to the hilt, who are in the courts facing repossession of their homes.

"When is the Government going to come forward with a plan to bail them out? When will they work through the night to insure against their losses? Those are the people with the most to lose." ENDS
