de Brún calls for big turn out at Acht na Gaeilge Rally

8 October, 2008

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has called on people from throughout Ireland who support the rights of Irish language speakers in the North to come out in huge numbers to support the Acht na Gaeilge Rally in Belfast on October 11th.

Ms de Brún said:

"Unionists should be under no illusion about the demand for an Irish language Act. This is an issue that is not going to disappear just because they cannot or will not accept the rights of people who want to use their native language.

"Gregory Campbell can bury his head in the sand and pretend that the issue of Acht na Gaeilge has 'been dealt with' all he wants but the rights of Irish speakers will not be limited or denied by any strain of unionism.

"The DUP need to wake up to the reality that the new political dispensation is here to stay. This includes the need for them to respect the rights of Irish language speakers. They need to make it clear whether or not they support the St Andrews Agreement because that is the basis on which we achieved a return of the political institutions.

"The issue has not been dealt with and will not be dealt with effectively until Gregory Campbell, as Minister for Culture, plays his part in introducing a fully comprehensive and rights based Irish Language Act for speakers here in the North of Ireland." ENDS
