School building list must include dates of construction - Doherty

8 October, 2008

Speaking in the Seanad today Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Senator Pearse Doherty accused the Government of treating the children of the state with contempt over the state of many of the schools in the state. He described the publication of a school building list including twenty-five schools as a kick in the teeth to the approximately 1,300 schools on the programme.

He said, "Perhaps the most blatant neglect and disregard shown to our young people by the Government is in the area of school buildings. By leaving our children to be taught in the conditions that many of them currently have to endure is to treat them with utter contempt.

"The publication by the Minister of a school building list with just twenty-five schools on it is a kick in the teeth to the approximately 1,300 schools currently in the School Building Programme.

"It is completely unacceptable that our children are to continue being taught in deplorable accommodation and conditions throughout the state without any indication of when proper school buildings will be provided.

"I welcome the fact that the Minister has committed to publish a full list of schools on the School Building Programme. I have been campaigning for the publication of such a list. But that in itself is not enough. The list must include a target date for the construction of all projects on it which is part of an overall fully resourced school building programme." ENDS
