Welcome for security downgrade at Magilligan Port – Brolly

9 October, 2008

Sinn Féin's East Derry MLA Francie Brolly has welcomed news that recent security checks at Magilligan Point Ferry crossing are to be scaled down but insists no such measures were necessary in the first place.

Mr Brolly said,

"These unnecessary recent checks were a major issue of concern for commuters using this particular crossing and a throwback to days that people thought we had moved on from.

Not only were the checks unwarranted they also presented a very curious situation whereby passengers travelling from Magilligan were subjected to searches yet passengers coming from Greencastle in Co Donegal were not.

Sinn Féin has raised this ludicrous situation with the Dublin Government and I am glad that the measures are to be scaled down and that it seems common sense has prevailed."
