McMullan welcomes streamlining of Minor Planning Applications
Sinn Féin councillor Oliver McMullan has welcomed the decision taken by Moyle District Council to deal with Planning Applications of a Minor Nature, through a revised Streamlined Consultation Arrangement.
The Divisional Planning Office has been operating a pilot scheme for streamlined consultation in the Derry City Council area since December 2007, the result of which was that approximately 40% of all planning applications are now dealt with in this way, thus expediting the processing time by several weeks.
Cllr McMullan explained;
"Basically this new arrangement provides for planning applications of a minor, non-contentious nature which up until now were subject to the same scrutiny as those of a major, more complex type. In other words, the same procedures applied to an application for a residential garage or disability access as would have done for a large commercial business or industrial premises.
"Following the success of the pilot scheme in Derry City Council, I'm delighted that Moyle have agreed to join. I understand Ballymoney and Limavady Councils have also adopted the scheme and would anticipate it being rolled out by many more.
"There are many benefits to this new approach to planning applications of a minor nature, not least of all the more effective and speedy processing of the vast majority of such applications. The removal of such applications from the Planning Committee Agenda will help free up more time for Council input into applications of a more contentious or complex nature." "The bottom line will be better customer service due to a reduction in processing times, a boost to the economy as speedier decisions will provide greater opportunities for small and medium businesses, particularly construction related and timescales for providing necessary and essential works for those with disabilities will be reduced considerably."
