Development and Climate Change cannot be separated: de Brún

21 October, 2008 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP and European Parliament Climate Change Committee member Bairbre de Brún has given her support to a report calling for greater emphasis on the link in Europe's policies between development and climate change.

Ms de Brún was commenting on the parliamentary report on a "Global Climate Change Alliance" which was presented to MEPs in Strasbourg.

Ms de Brún said:

"There is an undeniable link between development and climate change. We are seeing already how climate change is affecting the world's worst-off to a much greater degree than the developed world which still produces the greater part of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. This unjust situation will only continue unless the EU takes the link between climate change and development seriously.

"I fully support those NGOs and charities in Ireland and across the world that are campaigning for climate justice. I hope today's report will aid their campaign and increase public knowledge of how the developing world is paying the price for Europe's and the developed world's record on carbon emissions." ENDS
